Idaho Legislature Passes Bill Giving Victims More Time to File Suit

March 14, 2007

It passed unanimously out of the senate yesterday. The bill now goes to the Governor for signature. Upon signing effective date becomes July 1, 2007.

This is a huge development for victims everywhere as Idaho is the first state in the country in four years to pass a law granting sexual abuse victims an opportunity to seek justice against their abusers and their abuser's enablers. Not since California in 2002 and Connecticutt in 2003 changed their laws has this happened. Dozens of bills elsewhere around the country stalled out or were defeated by certain religious institutions and other pedophile-serving interests.

Notably, this bill was introduced and passed (without the involvement or lobbying of  any advocacy groups) by true conservatives that recognized the inequities of existing law and understood that no child sexual abuse victim should arbitrarily be denied an opportunity to seek justice. Idahoans should be very proud of their elected representatives for doing this.
